Certain classes of antibiotics

Certain classes of antibiotics like macrolides, sulfonamides, and tetracyclines.

Cancer treatment drugs like methotrexate – Studies indicate that using amoxicillin while being treated with methotrexate. This boosts the blood's overall methotrexate concentration and increases toxicity

Uriscoscuric medication

Chloramphenicol

Apart from the treatments above, amoxicillin might also have an adverse interaction with certain glucose tests. Urine tests for glucose which use Fehling's solution, Benedict's solution, and Clinitest have been shown to produce false-positive results. This reaction was observed only with ampicillin but since it shares the same antibiotic class as amoxicillin, its adverse interaction with glucose tests is deemed to apply to amoxicillin as well. The work around to this issue is to use tests that use enzyme reactions like Tes-Tape or Clinistix.

Are all Amoxicillin rashes allergic reactions?

Not all rashes developed by patients while undergoing ampicillin or amoxicillin treatment are allergic rashes as described above. About 3 to 10 percent of children undergoing amoxicillin or ampicillin treatments develop non-allergic rashes. Sometimes described as “amoxicillin rash,” this rash is often itchy and has been described as “measles-like.” This non-allergic rash starts out at the trunk of the patient and spreads from this location to other parts of the body. Interestingly enough, this rash is commonly thought to be a non-allergic reaction and the patient is not advised to stop taking amoxicillin because of this rash. Unfortunately, it is very hard to tell this rash from a more dangerous allergic rash. Make sure you consult with your primary caregiver once this kind of rash appears. Healthcare professionals can tell the difference between non-allergic rashes and allergic rashes which require the stoppage of amoxicillin use.

One alternative cause for non-allergic amoxicillin rash is mononucleosis. Some research studies indicate that around 80 to 90 percent of patients who are suffering from acute infection from the Epstein-Barr virus develop non-allergic amoxicillin rashes when treated with amoxicillin.

Which drugs demonstrate adverse interactions with Amoxicillin?

The following drug groups may interact adversely with Amoxicillin. If you are already taking these medications before amoxicillin use or you are taking amoxicillin and your doctor wants to prescribe these, make sure to tell your doctor so you can be prescribed alternate medication.

Anticoagulant compounds like pradaxa and warfarin

Allopurinol (excessive uric acid/gout treatment) – Studies indicate that this interaction increases the chances of developing a rash. However, this was observed with ampicillin and there is no data for amoxicillin interaction. Since ampicillin and amoxicillin are in the same antibiotic class, the interaction caution for ampicillin should be applied to amoxicillin.
